Well you pull the wipers up when there is a chance of ice and snow so that your wipers don't freeze to the glass, because if you don't do that and they do freeze you could tear the wiper apart when you turn them on the next time .

yeah, I've lived and skied in Utah most of my life and I still can't figure out why people do that.

I sometimes leave the wipers up if I know it's going to snow. It makes it sorta easier to clear off the whole windshield if your wipers are already up when it starts snowing. But if I forget I'm not like, "oh no I forgot to leave my wipers up, how will I ever clear off my windshield?"

you mean clear it off by hand. right? Whenever I get back in my car if its been dumping (2 feet or so) I just get it, close my door (important) ...and turn on the wipers. I guess thats Utah though, with 6-8% water density its not that heavy.

Turning on wipers with snow can fry your wiper motor depending on the weight of it.

I live in upstate NY where we see more than our fair share of snow and almost nobody does this but in Philly where I go to school everybody and their brother does this at the slightest sign of snow

Well, not with my bare hands. With this .

Kinja'd!!!

Wipers work on Wisconsin snow...to an extent. Example: we had 5" of snow on Saturday night. I was at my gf's place, a townhouse with a 1-car garage. My Jeep was parked in her driveway. I heard the plow out by the garage, I had to run out there quick and move the Jeep so the plow wouldn't skip her driveway. I did the wipers, and I could see out the front & back windows, but not the sides. I drove around the block and while the plow did her driveway, and when I came back it still kinda looked like this:

Kinja'd!!!

I refuse to be "that guy" driving with a giant cloud of snow blowing off the mountain piled up on their car.

I put a space heater inside my car for a few hours every morning. No snow or ice on my cars and the inside's toasty

My friends and I used to do that as a sort of practical joke to each others cars back in high school (along with folding in the mirrors). Alas we chose to stop after seeing a wiper arm slam down on a windshield during a strong gust of wind with such force it scratched the windshield.

I do it to my friends to piss them off. It doesn't snow and it barely rains here. If I know your car (specific details: decals, rims, car freshener, etc), I'll most likely raise it LOL.

It helps in those times when you have water on your windshield and it is freezing outside. Say you get half a foot of snow on top of that, and you end up with a snowy, icy, frozen stuck mess. Wipers don't like that. So put em up and they won't freeze to your windshield.

I do this on days like today where I drove in and got everything all melty, then go to let the car sit in the snow all day long. I'll also do it to coworkers I like (none)

If it's snowing, or worse, there is freezing rain, you put the wipers up so that they don't freeze to the glass. You should do this when you arrive with a warm windshield and the snow is falling.

This makes it (1) easier to scrape the ice off the window, and (2) less likely to damage the blades. Also, (3) the blades aren't all crusty with blobs of ice, so they actually work when you need them to.

well then please disregard. Here we get a lot of freezing rain which makes the snow heavy as shit.

I put it in the backseat once I'm done driving for the day and the timer turns it on at 3:30am or so. Go out, start it up, put the he after back in the garage and drive off. It's almost mandatory out here.

It's so your wipers dont freeze to your windshield and prevents huge chucks of ice freezing to them, it only saves a few moments getting your car ready but a few moments nun the less,

It's not the snow, it's the ice that you do it for. Not too many in WNY do it either, but ever since I saw someone doing it one day, I've been doing it ever since whenever the weather calls for frost/ice.

You ever have your wipers frozen to the windshield? I've nearly ripped the rubber off of my wipers before they were frozen so well to the windshield.

Not even close, Ive had ice completely cover the wipers but never frozen to the windshield

Well I've had it happen a couple times, and so now I leave the wipers up during any possible overnight freeze.
